International NGO applauds The New York Times' focus on women and development

New York, New York (August 25, 2009)--The Hunger Project (THP) applauds The New York Times and its editors and writers for the focus of the August 23, 2009 New York Times Magazine on "why women's rights are the cause of our time."

"The Women's Crusade," by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, is one of several articles in this special issue entitled "Saving the World's Women" which Editor, Gerald Marzorati, states is "a compendium of moving articles and pictures about issues confronting the world's women and what women are doing about them." In "The Women's Crusade," Kristof and WuDunn quote THP which has declared "Women are the key to ending hunger in Africa."

All THP's on-the-ground programs focus on the
empowerment of women and girls since women bear almost all responsibility for meeting basic needs of the family, yet are systematically denied the resources, information and freedom of action they need to fulfill this responsibility. Studies show that when women are supported and empowered, all of society benefits: their families are healthier, more children go to school, agricultural productivity improves and incomes increase. In short, communities become more resilient.

THP has been honored to work with many women whose stories are similar to those highlighted in the magazine's articles. For example,
Elizabeth Kalimbuka is a participant in THP's pilot microfinance program for people living with HIV/AIDS in Malawi. After participating in several workshops and trainings, including business management training, Elizabeth took out a small loan of about US$75 in 2006. Since then, she has taken out and repaid several more loans and now has two profitable businesses--animal husbandry and brick making. She has lifted herself and her family out of poverty and proudly declares "I am now able to buy enough food to feed my family!"

Jill Lester, President & CEO of THP said, "I am delighted that The New York Times has used its Sunday magazine to highlight the triumphs that result from women's empowerment and leadership. The August 23 magazine, along with Kristof and WuDunn's forthcoming book, draw attention and focus to the most significant action we can take to end hunger and poverty--empowering women."
